Crude oil futures rose Friday as Israel is reportedly preparing for a direct attack by Iran this weekend, in what would be the biggest escalation of Middle East tensions since the start of the Israel-Hamas war last October. Israel is preparing for a direct attack by Iran on southern or northern Israel as soon as Friday or Saturday, a person familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal. A person briefed by Iran's leadership told the Journal that no final decision has been made, though plans for a strike are under discussion. The U.S. embassy in Jerusalem Thursday restricted government employees and their family from personal travel outside Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Be'er Sheva "out of an abundance of caution" until further notice.

CNN —A doctor at a field hospital for detained Palestinians at Israel’s Sde Teiman army base has described “deplorable conditions” and “routine” amputations due to handcuff injuries, according to an exclusive report from the newspaper Haaretz. “Just this week, two prisoners had their legs amputated due to handcuff injuries, which unfortunately is a routine event,” the doctor said in the letter, according to the Haaretz report on Thursday. CNN spoke to a source who has a medical background and previously visited the Sde Teiman field hospital. The medical source highlighted the systematic “dehumanizing” of detainees at the field hospital, which they described as a large “tent” that is “not insulated” from the elements. “We were asked not to use our names,” the medical source told CNN, adding that the Gazan prisoners were identified by serial numbers, rather than their names.

This year my coexistence organization, Abrahamic Reunion, has hosted our 20th annual coexistence Iftar meal, this time in Jerusalem. Ramadan is a time when Muslims have to think about the other who is less fortunate than themselves. That is the essence of spiritual coexistence, in which your self-image makes room for the humanity of others. Spiritual coexistence means building bridges out of celebration, grief and the acknowledgment of God above us, no matter your faith. Mr. Ziadna, 26, was slain inside his tent, and four members of his Bedouin family vanished. At least 17 people killed in the Hamas attacks were Bedouins in and around Rahat, the biggest city in an impoverished, predominantly Bedouin area of southern Israel. Hamas did not directly target Bedouins, but “rockets and bullets don’t discriminate,” Dr. Fraiha said. A 27-year-old Israeli paramedic was working in a hospital when Hamas attacked on Saturday. He said the hospital looked like a scene out of a World War II movie. "People were dying like flies," Yan Gorjaltsan told Insider. Gorjaltsan described the hospital as a scene out of a World War II movie — nurses and doctors frantically taking care of patients while others scream for help. "Even though we always have our differences, when something like this starts, everybody just stops talking and starts working," Gorjaltsan told Insider.

Some are likening Saturday's attack on Israel by Hamas to the September 11, 2001, attacks on the US. The timing of the attack on Saturday morning "was a shock," Aisenberg told Insider on Sunday night from her home. Up and down the country, Israelis were angered by the lapses that enabled Hamas to evade the eyes of Jerusalem's military and intelligence services, Quinn added, calling the failures "incomprehensible." AdvertisementAdvertisementThere, close to the Gaza border, Aisenberg's mother- and father-in-law spent much of Saturday afternoon hiding in their home as Hamas fighters infiltrated their small town and wreaked havoc. 'We cannot afford to be divided'As the fighting continues, Aisenberg said Israelis are determined to prevail against Hamas and Hezbollah.

The second shot on goal came just before halftime but Katrina Gorry's long-range effort was easily gathered by Courtney Brosnan in the Ireland goal. Australia came out with more intent after the break and the half was only seven minutes old when Kyra Cooney-Cross sent the ball looping into the box and Ireland forward Marissa Sheva shoved Raso to the ground. Catley gave Brosnan no chance with the penalty, striking the ball with her left foot firmly into the top corner of the Ireland net. The penalty appeared to ease the Australian nerves and Mary Fowler, who had replaced Kerr up front, almost immediately stormed forward and lashed a shot high over the bar. Australia, however, held on to make a winning start to a tournament in which they feel they can be genuine contenders after wins over England, Spain and France this year.

Jerusalem CNN —Demonstrators took to the streets in Israel on Tuesday for what they are calling a day of “disruption and resistance” against the government’s moves to overhaul the country’s judicial system. The bill is one part of a sweeping package of judicial overhaul measures that would weaken the judiciary. But opponents of the plan say it threatens to turn Israel into a dictatorship by removing the most significant check on government actions. Demonstrators plan to protest at the country’s international airport, Ben Gurion, later on Tuesday. Netanyahu paused the legislative process in March following an unprecedented general strike that shut down much of Israel’s economy.

Israel, a major US partner, has not provided direct military aid to Ukraine. Russia allows Israel to conduct operations targeting Iran-linked forces in Syria, something it doesn't want to jeopardize. Israel, as of February 2022, was the largest cumulative recipient of US foreign assistance — most of which comes in the form of military support. But the country has stopped short of providing direct lethal military aid to Ukraine, despite pleas from leadership in Kyiv. Even as Moscow allows Israel to clamp down on Iranian influence in Syria, Russia and Iran have increased their military ties and support throughout the Ukraine war.
